Project Lykaion

The whole program was an opportunity the government saw to create extremely powerful soldiers to eliminate their enemies in a way no one had tried before. It was top secret- only a select few in the government, high rankers in the military and the people involved as scientists, biologists, handlers, trainers, guards etc. ever knew and still to this day only they know about it- with the initial cover of it being a drug trial (to keep the subjects from refusing to go along with/speaking out about it, for obvious reasons) for a new ‘strength boosting’ super drug to give to soldiers in the field with the purpose of making them more durable and formidable during battle and/or times of great stress. Jax doesn’t know the exact mechanizations of how the military scientists managed to create a drug that could induce lycanthropy, but he’s pretty sure he heard about some sort of mix of wolf, bear and human DNA, and other chemicals he can’t even begin to learn the name of. The status of lycanthropy was achieved by daily administrations of this drug over time (the length of which lessened as the years went on and the serum formula was tweaked and improved), which took over the host body's cells and rewrote them, effectively changing their entire genetic makeup from the inside out and allowing for the shifting between beast and human form. The Subjects were subjected to routine and invasive medical procedures to monitor the progress of the drug in their system and their reactions to it, including: blood tests, tissue samples, vivisections, MRIs/CT scans etc, as well as put through physical trials on a weekly basis to judge their health, durability and the extent of their abilities (they would be monitored during these trials). The difficulty of the trials was amped up over the months as the program progressed, testing strength, speed, reflexes, stamina etc to the point where normal humans would be unable to complete them and even the enhanced subjects began to struggle.Torture wasn’t a normal part of their routine, but military officials wouldn’t hesitate to use it if they believed a subject to be ‘misbehaving’ or underperforming. Electroshock therapy, long stints of isolation (this was also used in non-correctional instances to monitor how the subjects would react during prolonged periods alone), control over the subject's food/water supply were some of the methods that were used to keep them in line.
All subjects were given tracking chips embedded under their skin in hard to reach locations to be monitored when sent out on assignments. Jax managed to break his during his escape and dig out the fragments later. The missions the subjects were sent on almost always ended in the murder of the target they were assigned (‘enemies of America’ is how the military officials at base would describe them, but Jax called bullshit), but on rare occasions one or two subjects would be sent to scope out locations and retrieve data, thanks to their enhanced senses (like smell and the ability to see clearly even in pitch black darkness) and stealth capabilities (for large beasts, they’re very, very good at stalking and sneaking up on things). The night Jax escaped was a planned effort made by all of the subjects together. It had been put into motion and tweaked for months, and once they received an assignment with the perfect location (far away from civilization where they’d have a better chance at getting away) the plan was underway. Each subject would scramble at the same time to make it impossible for the low number of handlers assigned to them to track them all down, heading in different directions, whatever it took to shake the tail. It was planned for them to all meet up afterwards at a specified rendezvous point, but this never happened and Jax lost all contact with the rest of the subjects in his attempt to get back to the states unnoticed. The way silver works against the wolves is a lot like an extremely bad, prolonged allergic reaction, but differs drastically from anaphylactic shock. It causes intense burning- about what would be considered normal for a gunshot wound- on instant contact, and soon a red, splotchy rash at the sight where the silver had been or is currently touching. Over time as the contact period increases, the rash worsens, as does the burning sensation- which can trade itself for muscle and bone deep aches and sharp, stabbing pains through the muscle-, and causes the subjects to become lightheaded and short of breath. Continued exposure can cause blisters and open sores, serious infection, septic shock, nerve damage, body-wide inflammation (especially in joints and eventually organs), swelling of the throat, and eventual shut down of the organs (which is far more likely with higher amounts of silver contact for longer periods of time). The cause for such a reaction is thanks to new properties in the subject’s rewritten DNA from the lycanthrope serum, caused by a certain chemical compound in the serum that creates a serious adversity to the elemental makeup of silver in their cells. The generic name of the lycanthropy inducing drug/serum that was administered to Jax and the other subjects is Luponovec. The only supply of this drug in the world is created and held tightly inside of Lykaion labs.
Lykaion Subjects
Lykaion Staff
Teddy Volkova - Subject 0
Ajax Gunn - Group 1
Gunner Reyes - Group 1
Tristan Shaw - Group 3
Freya Daniels - Group 3
Leon Delvaux - Group 4
Gregory Payne AKA ‘Agent Fenrir’ - The Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations and Low-Intensity Conflict. One of several original founders of Project Lykaion, and the most heavily involved of all founders with missions and the subjects themselves. Continues to operate in the shadows as one of the main overseers of the program to this dayVictor Johnston - Ex-Army Major stationed as head handler of all subjects- though focused predominantly on Group 1- and primary training instructor. Also worked closely under Payne with the subjects on their mission perimeters and how and by whom they were to be carried out. Retired after the original subjects escaped in 2013
Project Romulus

Soon after the subjects escaped- while Lykaion was (and still is) working on getting them back- with no other human guinea pigs to continue testing new and improved versions of the serum on and wary of the idea to continue working with injections of the pure serum on more soldiers before it is completely stable because of, well, what happened the last time, the officials in charge of the project tasked select members of their staff with taking children out of foster systems and group homes back in the states; children they knew people probably wouldn’t miss. They would placate these children in saying that what they were to be used for- what hell they'd soon have to endure- was for the greater good of their nation and the people within it, and that they’re a lucky few, being given a roof over their heads, food, and doting handlers as parental figures. Of course, this was all a front for its true purpose; while Project Romulus' goal is not to create a batch of lycan supersoldiers in the same way Lykaion's is, it is used to test new versions of the serum on its subjects (in this case, the children) to monitor and study its effects, how well it works and what they can do to continue improving it for max efficiency on the subjects parts, and max control on the parts of the handlers. The end goal for Romulus (and ultimately Lykaion as well) is to figure out a way to and eventually mass produce a perfect version of the serum for selective use amongst the entirety of the U.S. armed forces in the eventual future. The base Romulus is conducted in is located in Nevada, U.S., code-named Lupercal.Leftover samples of the Lykaion subject's DNA has been used in more recent versions of the serum given to the children, meaning not only do they now have Teddy's DNA in them, but the rest of the Lykaion unit's as well.
Lycan Death Squad

The Lycan Death Squad was dreamed up in late 2013 by Lykaion officials after the original Lykaion subjects had escaped, and was finally put into motion after several months of experiments involving Raúl de Soto (Subject B-0) and several other highly skilled soldiers stationed on the base as subject wranglers that were deemed perfect potential subjects for what the officials and the project scientists both had planned. Upon extensive research and testing of the biting method for transferring the serum from one subject to the next, the scientist found that as they worked down the line- having one subject be bitten, and then having that recently bitten subject bite another- the amount of the serum’s chemical compounds in the blood grew less and less, and thus its effects became weaker and weaker. It was noted, however, that as the serum and its effects lessened, the subjects were more and more able to control their newfound beastly instincts and behaviors, a problem that Lykaion had struggled with as a whole with its original subjects once they’d transformed completely. Lykaion saw potential in this, and after ruling out a number of subjects through intense physical, mental and behavioral tests, found that the few subjects that had come from Raúl’s initial bite were the closest thing to a perfect mix of power and controllability. Though not nearly as powerful in either their human nor lycan forms compared to the original subjects or Raúl himself, the scientists found that, like a wolf pack, they were extremely efficient and deadly in numbers, and despite not having the raw enhanced strength or senses matching that of Raúl and the original subjects, one of the squad soldiers alone was more than enough to take on an average adult male in peak condition. Using these findings, the scientists had Raúl bite and infect another several soldiers, evening out the all together number to 12, and once all of the soldiers began showing signs and symptoms of change, they were quickly thrown into a fast paced and brutal training regime closely resembling that of what the original subjects went through to hone their skills and learn to better manage and fight with the beasts inside. They were also trained to work closely as a team, spending day in and day out with one another until they could practically read each other’s thoughts and guess one another’s moves before they were made, which makes them that much more lethal in battle. The end goal of having an elite squad of super soldiers to specialize in undercover assassination efforts and the like was finally achieved, and, if their first mission on the field pans out to be a success, Lykaion is eyeing them as a possible alternative to the original idea of using full blooded werewolves born of the serum, under the assumption that the mission of Project Romulus to create a serum with faster acting effects and, most importantly, the ability for the subjects injected with it to retain more of their mind instead of succumbing to the beast proves to be a futile effort. The soldiers of the lycan death squad are able to shift fully and both at will any time during the day or night along with unwillingly every full moon, though because of the reduced amount of serum in their bodies and as a result less of a complete genetic change, their lycan forms are somewhat different than that of the full blooded werewolf subjects. Unlike the larger, more traditional bipedal, hulking wolf-like forms of the others, the squad soldiers are more human in their appearance, only growing some inches in height instead of feet and keeping more humanlike facial features instead of long pointed ears and a muzzle. This also follows the same pattern for their abilities, which while excelling that of normal human capability, don’t quite match those of the original subjects and Raúl. This includes a less dramatic increase in their strength, smell, sight, hearing, stamina, healing, etc.
Lykaion Timeline

•⠀The idea of The Program was floated in the very early 2000’s•⠀The Program was officially started up (illegally, with only the top of top brass and very few government officials aware) in 2004. Lykaion scientist worked hard on a viable serum to no avail (it was around this time that Teddy would have been added into the program and experimented on, and after some time a working serum was eventually produced from her DNA)•⠀2006 - Jax and two other soldiers were introduced into the program under the guise of it being a military drug trial. They were given injections of the serum every day for several months and monitored on how well their bodies reacted•⠀2007 - With the outcomes of the subjects and their reactions to the serum looking up, the program introduces three more soldiers into the fray. They too are given the drug daily and monitored. The initial subjects have not yet transformed, but their body's genetic makeup has changed significantly•⠀Late 2007 - The original subjects achieve their first transformation. It’s gruesome; multiple project staff and guards are killed. The original subjects are locked up while project scientists try to figure out how to even out their reactions•⠀2008 - The second group of soldiers achieve their first transformation, quicker this time. The staff are prepared and keep them locked away and monitored as it happens. The original group is put into intensive training. The second group is added into the training once they are able to manage their shifting•⠀2010 - A Third group of three soldiers is added into the program. Full transformation is achieved much quicker than the first and second groups. The serum is constantly being worked on and improved. The first and second groups of soldiers begin to be sent on missions•⠀Late 2010 - The third group of soldiers is added to missions when possible. Staff are still trying to work on the original and second group of subject’s volatility. Intensive training continues, as does medical testing, constant monitoring of subjects actions and continued exposure to both the serum and extreme external stimuli. It is also around this time that Raúl- one of the primary wranglers and guards for the first group of subjects- is bitten in an altercation with Jax; he’s quickly taken to a private unit to be treated and monitored, though he is allowed to return back to his duty as a subject wrangler after receiving an initial clean bill of health. Despite this, Lykaion scientists- under the orders of Gregory Payne- keep a close eye on him•⠀2011 - A fourth batch of three soldiers is introduced to the program. Transformation is achieved within weeks of administration of the serum. They are put into training. The others continue their missions. Raúl, who at first had shown no clear signs of any effects from Jax’s bite, begins exhibiting symptoms similar to the first group of Lykaion subjects before they had reached their first transformation. He’s once again taken off of active duty and to a private unit in the lab to be monitored. Several weeks of consecutive testing show an inclining presence of chemical compounds from the lycan drug spreading throughout his system; his DNA and cellular makeup are constantly changing and being rewritten in much of the same way as the Lykaion subjects after receiving constant doses of the serum, which excites the scientists and leads to their decision to permanently relieve him of his previous position and keep him in the lab to watch and test him at all times. This information and Raúl himself are all kept secret from the 4 groups of Lykaion subjects•⠀Late 2011 - The fourth group of subjects are added to missions; their focus is more on data retrieval, stealth and surveillance then the previous three groups. Raúl continues to experience worsening symptoms as he changes; the scientists begin to put him through trials and training similar to that given to the Lykaion subjects to test him and gauge how strong the effects of the serum have manifested in him•⠀Late 2012 - The subjects come together and a rebellion is started; a plan is put into place to escape•⠀2013 - Raúl achieves his first transformation to the delight of the Lykaion scientists and the heads of the project alike, proving the serum and its effects are able to be transmitted through blood/blood or blood/saliva contact. Using this information, the scientists begin conducting tests using Raúl and several other recently relieved wranglers as guinea pigs, having Raúl bite them to monitor how the serum spreads in other subjects from a source that wasn’t originally administered the lycan drug. Not long after, the original subjects execute their plan and escape in the middle of a joint mission against a very high value group of targets stationed in a remote and nearly deserted area. None but Tristan Shaw make it to the rendezvous point•⠀2013 to 2020 - The subjects are left wandering alone. Jax Gunn (once Colton Dwyer) makes it back to the United States, dons an alias and goes into hiding, traveling across the country in a constant effort to keep the eyes of those involved with the program (which continues to operate to this day in the shadows, working on mass producing the serum with the help of Project Romulus- which is started up mid-2014- and hoping to get the opportunity to get their original subjects back) off of his back. In 2020, he begins to run into and re-establish relationships with some of the other subjects. Meanwhile, the program, while in the midst of efforts to retrieve their original subjects, continues to work on their side-project with Raúl and the half-lycans he’d been made to create. After discovering that, the farther down the line they go of having subjects administer the serum to another through a bite or blood transfusion, the effects of the serum weaken until they’re barely detectable, the scientists find the perfect mixture of power and controllability in the soldiers produced from Raúl’s bite vs. any of the others after him and decide to enroll them in an intense training regiment meant to hone their skills and better use their new beastly instincts to their advantage•⠀late 2020 to mid-2021 - Jax is killed in a building collapse while hunting down those involved with Project Lykaion in the states caused by a premature self destruct. His body is found several months later and taken back to Lykaion labs by Lykaion scouts sent to survey the damage, and after months of tests and experiments, is reanimated- thus bringing him back to life. With no memory of himself or his former life, Jax is molded by his new handlers into a weapon for the program devoid of any free will and is tasked with hunting down the other subjects and bringing them back to be reinstated into the program- or killed if they resist•⠀Late 2021 to present - Jax’s objective to recapture or eliminate the other subjects is halted by recovering memories set off by a fight with Tristan. Jax is subsequently locked by Tristan in a basement until proven he’s no longer a threat, and spends that period of time- nearly a full week- alone, haunted by flashbacks and returning memories. More or less back to some semblance of himself, he eventually escapes his confinement- initially unbeknownst by Tristan- and leaves the city in a hotwired car, aimlessly wandering from town to town while he figures out what to do with himself, and keep as much distance between himself and the other subjects as possible
